About 40 years ago when the first microprocessor was born the size of the transistor on it is one million nano-meter, it's the size of the tip of a needle. There are just 2300 transistors on the first microprocessor. Two years ago Intel corporation has released Itanium processor which has 2200000000 transistors over it which means within a period of 40 years the number of transistors have been raised to thousands of time. At the same time the processing speed of the computers are also increased. The below Table show the clear picture of increase in number of transistors from 1971-2011
